Joanna Rader (b. 1993) in Eisenach, Germany, lives and works in Berlin and Weimar.

Religion is a topic that has shaped me, the baptized, confirmed, and ex-church member, since childhood - even as a child, I felt the oppressive weight of the wooden cross hanging over the kitchen table during each of my weekly visits to my great-grandmother, while eating my beloved butter noodles. In my paintings, installations, and sculptures, I repeatedly address socio-critical themes with personal references, and see not only the end result but also the creative process itself as a personal performative act and an important component of my artistic expression.
